Four Pool Leak Signs That Do Not Involve Pooling Water

by Franklin Wilson

If you notice your pool is leaking, do not expect to see a pool of water outside your pool. While puddles of water are a common indicator of leaks, this is not the only symptom of the problem. The signs of a leak can show up in a lot of more subtle ways. Make sure you know how to spot this issue to safeguard your wallet and your property.

1. Pool Wall Cracking

If you notice cracks in the wall of the pool, this is definitely a cause for concern. Not only can this problem signal a current leak, but it also is an indicator of future leaks if not addressed. It is important to note that the crack itself is not necessarily a symptom of the leak, but instead, the leak is the symptom of a crack. More than likely there is either some settling going on or some other damage to the pool that caused the leak.

2. Altered pH Readings

If you stay on top of maintenance, you probably monitor the pH level in your pool regularly. If you start to notice that your readings are all over the place, a leak could be the problem. As water moves out of the pool, it can alter the pH level of the water, often causing the level to increase. When the pH level is not in the appropriate range, the pool can be unsafe for use. Have someone come out and check for a leak.

3. Increased Water Usage Costs

One of the indicators of a leak that does not require you to even step outside is an increase in your water usage cost. Many newer pools have a feature that will automatically refill the water in the pool when it falls below the preset threshold. Obviously, if you have a water leak, just as soon as the water is refilled, it will leak out, and more water will be added. As a result of this back and forth, you will likely notice a considerable increase in your water usage cost.

4. Air Bubbles

You should also be on the lookout for air bubbles. When water passes through a small space, the transfer of air and water will often cause bubbles to form. In the case of a significant leak, you may even detect a gurgling-like noise that may be audible outside of the water. Even if you do not detect any other signs of a leak, the air bubbles should be cause for concern.

Working So You Can Take a Swim

At the end of a long, hot day, nothing feels better than sinking into a cool pool of water. But think about all it takes to build and maintain that pool. A pool contractor had to first design the pool before pouring the concrete that comprises it. Then, as the pool ages, someone needs to make repairs when the surfaces starts peeling. That's not to mention the daily maintenance, like checking chlorine levels or scrubbing away algae. Pool contractors have an important job, and they're the reason you can take a relaxing swim.
