How To Repair Your Pump If It Isn't Running Properly

by Franklin Wilson

When you run your pump all summer long, it can wear on your pump and filter and the other moving parts of your swimming pool. If you're having issues with your pump, it can leave your swimming pool open to algae and bacterial issues. The pump is responsible for pulling water from the pool and sending it to the filter to clean the water. If your pump isn't working, it isn't going to be able to clean your pool. Read on for pump issues and what you can do to repair them.

No Water Inside

If the pump isn't getting any water inside, it isn't going to be able to send the water to the filter to be cleaned. If you aren't getting any water in the pump, it can end up blowing up the motor, as it needs water to run. If there isn't any water in the pump, check the skimmer basket to see if it's full. If the basket is full or the hose running from the basket to the pump is clogged, it can block the water from getting to the pump. Check the hose and check the basket, then remove anything clogging it. If this wasn't the issue, you should check the filter inside the pump. If this is clogged, clean it out as well.

Air In The Pump

If you have air bubbles in the pump, the pump isn't going to be able to pull in as much water as it should be. If there is air in the pump, it can be removed by opening up the pump lid and allowing the water to flow out. Immediately put the lid back on once the water starts to flow over. After this occurs, continue to run the pump to be sure there isn't any more air getting into the pump. If there is, check the water level of the pool. Add water if necessary.

Pump Not Turning On At All

If your pump isn't turning on at all, you should check first to see if you have power. Check to be sure you didn't blow a fuse in your breaker box and that you have power to the pump itself. If there is power, it could be an internal issue in the pump. Unplug the pump and remove the back cover on the pump. Check that the capacitor is intact. If the capacitor is burned out, you should replace it with a new one, which can be found at your local pool supply store. Replace the capacitor, and test to ensure it's working properly.

If your pool pump isn't working properly or isn't running at all, it can cause issues for your pool if it isn't repaired right away. Call a pool repair company for help with any swimming pool repairs you can't do on your own.
