Swimming Pool Leaks & Repairs

by Franklin Wilson

Access to a swimming pool in the backyard is one of the greatest leisure time luxuries for a homeowner who loves to swim. However, if a homeowner doesn't keep up with the responsibilities that comes along with owning a pool, problems can develop that makes it unsafe or useless to swim in. For example, if a pool is damaged to the extent of not being able to hold water for long because it leaks out, a homeowner might not be able to enjoy it due to water constantly draining out. There are also ways in which water can leave out of a pool without there being any leaks present. If you are experiencing problems with water leaving out of your swimming pool, several repairs might be needed.

Water Leaves Out Through a Damaged Drain

If your water seems to leave out at a fast pace, it can be due to a drain being damaged inside the swimming pool. Drains are designed for removing water, so it is possible that one or more of them are damaged and allowing water to drain out without your knowledge. For instance, the mechanism that prevent water from automatically draining out might need a repair. The best way to figure out if the drains are problematic is to get them inspected by a pool repair contractor. Parts inside of the drains might need to be replaced, or the contractor can replace the drains altogether.

There Are Holes in the Shell of the Pool

Another possible reason for water to drain out of a swimming pool is if the pool shell is damaged. If there are holes in the shell, water can leak out in large amounts on a regular basis. Depending on how badly the shell is damaged, a pool repair contractor might be able to patch up the holes to resolve the problem. However, you should be prepared to invest in a new shell if the damage is too extensive for the holes to be properly patched up. If you have a swimming pool that has a common design, finding a replacement shell should be easy, but a custom one can be made as well.

Water Naturally Evaporates from the Sun

Other than leaks, it is common for pool water to naturally evaporate, and it happens due to the heat that is produced by the sun. You cannot prevent the sun shining, but you can cover the pool to create a barrier that prevents it from making contact with the water. If you decide to purchase a pool cover, don't opt for one that is a net or mesh, as it will still make it possible for water to evaporate.

Working So You Can Take a Swim

At the end of a long, hot day, nothing feels better than sinking into a cool pool of water. But think about all it takes to build and maintain that pool. A pool contractor had to first design the pool before pouring the concrete that comprises it. Then, as the pool ages, someone needs to make repairs when the surfaces starts peeling. That's not to mention the daily maintenance, like checking chlorine levels or scrubbing away algae. Pool contractors have an important job, and they're the reason you can take a relaxing swim.
