Maintaining Your Swimming Pool: 3 Tasks You Need To Do

by Franklin Wilson

Your swimming pool is a great source of entertainment throughout the warm weather months. It's nice to cool off and take a dip in the pool after a long day at work, or going for a night swim with your family on a warm summer night. Although your swimming pool is a wonderful source of entertainment, it isn't going to last you long if you don't care for it properly. Your swimming pool needs maintenance performed on it in order to lengthen the life of your pool.

Read on for a few maintenance tasks you need to do to your swimming pool.

1. Add Chemicals

It may not sound right to add chemicals to a pool that you and your family are swimming in, but without these chemicals, bacteria can grow in the water and leave your water unhealthy to swim in. Your pool needs chemicals to kill the bad bacteria and prevent it from growing in order to keep your water safe for swimming. Chemicals that may need to be added include chlorine, pH stabilizers, and algaecide. If you aren't sure how much or what chemicals your water needs, take a sample of your pool water to a pool supply store for testing and for more information about what type of chemicals your pool needs, including a schedule of when to add these chemicals.

2. Test The Water

You should be testing your water to check the levels of the chemicals in your water. This testing can help you determine what chemicals need to be added to the water. Testing kits can be found at most big box stores, at a pool supply store, or on-line. Test your water weekly. Use the manufacturer's instructions on how to use the testing kit to ensure you are using it properly.

3. Vacuum The Liner

The liner of your pool can accumulate dirt and debris on the pool floor, as can the sides of the liner and around the waterline. Use a pool vacuum to remove buildup of this debris and any algae that has begun to grow. Move the vacuum slowly around the pool floor and along the walls to remove the debris. It can be difficult to vacuum too high up on the walls, or near the waterline, so use a soft cloth to wipe away any debris at the water line when you are in the pool. Things such as oils from your skin can create a line around the pool, as can some floating debris. A wipe down along the water line each time you swim is one way to help prevent stains in these areas.

These are just a few maintenance tasks your pool requires in order to keep the water safe for swimming and to lengthen the life of your pool. Hire a pool maintenance service to get the best results.
