Pool Pump Troubleshooting Guide to Get the Water Circulating in Your Pool Before Opening

by Franklin Wilson

The pool maintenance that needs to be done before opening includes revising the equipment. Sometimes, there may be problems with the pump, and you will want to troubleshoot these problems to get the filter working and water circulating. The following pool pump troubleshooting guide will help you get the water circulating in your pool to open it in time for the hot summer weather:

1. Cleaning Out the Trap

The pool pump and filter has a trap that removes the debris that can cause problems with the pump. This is usually a large canister with a clear lid on it and some type of screen in it. If you look inside this canister and see debris, you will need to open it and remove the debris before backwashing the filter. This is a chore that you will need to do repeatedly as you clean your pool.

2. Priming the Pump

Once you have the trap clean, you may need to prime the pump to start it and get the water circulating. Use a bucket of water and poor it in the clean-out trap to start the suction to get the water moving. If this does not start your pool pump, you will want to move on to the next troubleshooting step for cleaning the pump.

3. Taking the Pump Apart

If you have cleaned the trap and primed the pump, but it still does not work, you will want to remove the pump and start cleaning it. Take all the parts of the pump off and clean them separately to remove any dry algae and debris that have been caught in the pump since last summer. Then, reassemble the pump and connect it to see if this has solved the problem.

4. Checking the Electrical Breakers, Switches, and Controls

If you have done all the other troubleshooting steps and the pump still does not come on, there may be a problem with the power. Check the electricity and make sure that the breaker circuit and power switch are on. If there is still a problem with the power, you will want to have a repair service inspect and repair the pump.

5. Problems with an Old and Worn Out Pool Pump Motor

Sometimes, the problems with your pool pump may just be that it is old. This can be due to the motor being worn out and not working at all or the pump having less power. To solve these problems contact a pool pump repair service to have them replace the worn parts or the entire pump if it cannot be repaired.

These are some of the problems that you will want to look for when troubleshooting your pool pump. If you are having problems with your pool equipment, contact a pool pump repair service for help repairing the problems before summer.
